Summer is coming! Is that a joyful statement or a scary one? I hope it is joyful. This Sunday the Worship Services Committee will be asking your help in selecting Theme Words for next fall. Come Sunday and participate in the “dot voting”. They are also finalizing the Summer Services brochure, with much help from Susie Gullixson, our Office Administrator. The Children’s Religious Education Committee is planning Children’s programs for the summer too. It looks like a great lineup: come to Church this summer, use our new fans and wear light clothing. By the way, this Sunday’s predicted high temperature is “downright toasty.”
NOISE: The Membership Committee is crowing about out new members. Please be sure to spend some time with Donald I., Jenise L. and Hans R., Michelle N., or Lisbet D. over the next few weeks, and make them feel a part of the Coastal Virginia Unitarian Universalists!
MORE NOISE: And the Stewardship Committee is crowing too — “Stewie” the fire-rooster has led us to a record-breaking stewardship campaign. Even with a few more pledges to be counted, we have passed our goal. Congregational growth is not just the number of people, it also includes growth in commitment to becoming a larger community. More money means we can afford more training in the year ahead, and can learn — together — new ways to grow into our new identity.
AND MORE NOISE: Our team from the Racial Justice subcommittee certainly has reason to cheer! The “Teach-In on White Supremacy — A Denominational Anti-Racism Initiative” was well-attended, with wonderful music (thank you Karen S., Women’s Choir featuring Elizabeth P., soloist!) and a dozen members of the congregation coordinating and reading. And thanks to Rev. Jennifer Ryu for joining us for the morning. Ken S. read excerpts from an article by Rev. Rosemary Bray McNatt. If you would like to read the full article, here it is: http://www.uuworld.org/articles/uu-must-change
The “Church Year” ain’t over yet! I still can use more “dads” to help with the Father’s Day service on the June 18. Send me an e-mail directly, firstname.lastname@example.org with “DAD” in the title if you can help read. I hope to have the service relate to the spirituality of being a father and having a father. Join the collaboration. The service will end with a farewell to our banner… we send it and delegates to New Orleans for the Unitarian Universalist Association’s General Assembly. As we UU’s say: “It ain’t over until the choir sings the Postlude!” Summer series starts June 25.
UPCOMING: Tuesday Evening’s Interfaith LGBTQSI Celebration (6/13) starts off PRIDE WEEK. The “Celebration” will be an hour-long community ritual for reflection on where we are as a community, where we might go from here and the challenges LGBTQ+ persons still face in 2017. Faith leaders from across Hampton Roads will be joining together — some seeing our space for the first time, and others (like the Metropolitan Community Church) coming to a place they once called home.
It would be good to have a number of UCN/CVUU community members here before the 7 PM start, to help usher and welcome the community. They would also like a short reception following the event, and if we can do the table arranging for dessert finger food donations, that would be helpful too. As always, having People to clean up helps makes the evening end well.
Enjoy Harvey Edward Jones this Sunday. Bring in food bank donations. Stay in touch!
I love you,
